Giunta al suo quarto appuntamento, unosolo, la project room di 1/9unosunove, presenta la prima mostra personale in Italia dell’artista inglese Oliver Clegg (1980, Guilford, UK).
Pur nella varietà dei materiali e delle tecniche impiegate, i lavori di Oliver Clegg sono permeati da una sicura padronanza delle tecniche tradizionali che ne garantisce unitarietà ed equilibrio. Dai dipinti alle incisioni, dagli intagli ai ricami, la produzione di Oliver Clegg si caratterizza per l’utilizzo di materiali non propriamente artistici come supporto delle opere.
Banchi scolastici, ante di credenze di epoca vittoriana, vecchi fazzoletti di stoffa, tutti materiali di reimpiego, diventano le superfici che accolgono l’intervento dell’artista.
Questa particolare cifra stilistica armonizza sotto una comune poetica i contrasti disseminati nel suo lavoro: superficie e contenuto, bidimensionalità e tridimensionalità, descrizione e sintesi, passato e presente, malinconia e qualità estetica, chiaro e scuro. I quattro lavori in mostra sono pensati in maniera unitaria sia da un punto di vista concettuale, sia da un punto di vista formale: i materiali impiegati dialogano tra loro in un gioco di continui rimandi in cui il soggetto del quadro ne diventa il supporto, annullando la distanza tra l’oggetto concreto e la sua rappresentazione.
Oliver Clegg (1980 Guilford, UK) vive e lavora tra Londra e Cornwall. Tra le recenti mostre personali ricordiamo: Nights Move, Freud Museum, Londra, a cura di James Putnam (2008). Tra le principali mostre collettive: Distortion, Gervasuti Foundation, Venezia, a cura di James Putnam (2009); The Art of Chess, Reykjavik Museum of Modern Art, Reykjavik, a cura di Julia Royse e Mark Sanders (2009).
La mostra proseguirà fino a sabato 15 maggio 2010.

On the occasion its fourth exhibition, unosolo, the project room of 1/9unosunove, presents the first solo show in Italy by English artist Oliver Clegg (1980, Guilford, UK).
The broad range of materials and techniques employed by Oliver Clegg is permeated by a mastery of traditional techniques which guarantees his artworks harmony and balance. From paintings to etchings, from carvings to embroideries, the production of Oliver Clegg is characterized by the use of non-artistic materials as new unusual surfaces, such as art school drawing boards, Victorian cupboards doors, Edwardian hankerchiefs, pages from old diaries and books.
This particular stylistic choice harmonizes under a common poetics all the contrasts littered in his works: surface and content, two and three-dimensionality, past and present, melancholy and aesthetic, description and synthesis, light and dark. Although lacking a real sense of narrative, the four artworks in the exhibition are conceived as an installation, both from a conceptual and a formal point of view: the materials and the subjects dialogue with each other forming a complex web of allusions and associations in which the subject becomes part of the surface thus dissolving the gap between the object and its representation.
Oliver Clegg (1980 Guilford, UK) lives and works between London and Cornwall. Most recent solo exhibitions include Nights Move, Freud Museum, London, curated by James Putnam (2008). The exhibition will be on view until May 15th 2010.
