In occasione della sua prima mostra in Italia l’artista norvegese Per-Oskar Leu (Oslo, 1980) presenta il film Vox Clamantis in Deserto, una sorta di canto del cigno nel panorama del “True Norwegian Black Metal”. Considerato negativamente per la sua misantropia e per lo sfrontato rifiuto dei valori cristiani tradizionali, il black metal norvegese si è imposto all’attenzione del mondo all’inizio degli anni ’90, in seguito ad un’ondata di delitti e incendi di chiese. La grande risonanza mediatica suscitata da questi eventi ha innescato un fenomeno di isteria di massa senza precedenti, e solo in seguito ai sempre maggiori consensi da parte della critica, l’attenzione si è spostata su un fenomeno che inizialmente era stato considerato dal pubblico generico come maligno e antisociale. Vent’anni dopo il genere è ritenuto una delle principali esportazioni musicali norvegesi, e i suoi musicisti sono diventati improbabili portavoce della cultura norvegese all’estero.
Il film è basato sull’aria Vesti la Giubba dall’opera Pagliacci di Ruggero Leoncavallo. Vestito con un costume caratteristico del black metal, Leu interpreta il ruolo di Pagliaccio, il clown tormentato che uccide la moglie e il suo amante in un accesso di gelosia. Girato in luoghi diversi, principalmente il negozio di dischi Helvete (che letteralmente significa Inferno) e la Holmenkollen Chapel (incendiata e distrutta nel 1992 dal musicista norvegese Varg Vikernes), il lavoro cerca di smontare alcuni dei miti che ancora oggi circondano il black metal norvegese. Altre scene sono filmate nel nuovo Teatro dell’Opera di Oslo, determinando così ulteriori paralleli tra la natura teatrale e l’inclinazione ai gesti enfatici che entrambe le espressioni musicali condividono.
Mettere in discussione la nozione di autenticità è un tema ricorrente nel lavoro di Leu. Mentre il black metal è salutato ancora da alcuni come l’ultima vera espressione della cultura giovanile trasgressiva, l’artista sceglie invece di tracciare la sua transizione da movimento satanico underground a forma di intrattenimento più convenzionale. Così Vox Clamantis in Deserto si legge come una tragedia faustiana, soffermandosi sul compito apparentemente impossibile di far valere la ribellione in una società dove un posto sotto i riflettori neutralizza con successo ogni tentativo di sovversione.

For his first show in Italy Norwegian artist Per-Oskar Leu (Oslo, 1980) presents the film Vox Clamantis in Deserto, a swan song for the 'True Norwegian Black Metal'. Infamous for its misanthropy and blatant rejection of traditional Christian values, Norwegian black metal was thrust into the world's attention in the early 1990's, following a wave of murders and church burnings. Vast media coverage of the events sparked an unprecedented mass hysteria, but as more and more bands won critical acclaim, the tide soon shifted on a phenomenon that had initially been deemed as evil and antisocial by the general public. Twenty years later the genre is considered one of Norway's biggest musical exports, and the performers have become unlikely ambassadors of Norwegian culture abroad.
The film Vox Clamantis in Deserto is based on the aria Vesti la Giubba from Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci. Dressed in characteristic black metal costume, Leu interprets the role of Pagliaccio, the tormented clown who kills his wife and her lover in a fit of jealous rage. Shot at various landmark locations such as the former record store Helvete (literally meaning Hell) and the Holmenkollen Chapel (burned to the ground by seminal figure Varg Vikernes in 1992), the work attempts to dismantle some of the myths that still surrounds Norwegian black metal to this day. Additional scenes are filmed at Oslo's newly built opera house where further parallels are drawn between the theatrical nature and grand gestures shared by both musical expressions.
Questioning notions of authenticity is a recurring theme in much of Leu's work. While black metal is still hailed by some as the last truly transgressive youth culture, Leu chooses instead to trace its transition from satanic underground movement into mainstream entertainment. Thus Vox Clamantis in Deserto reads as a Faustian tragedy, dwelling on the seemingly impossible task of asserting rebellion in a society where a place in the spotlight will successfully neutralize any attempt at subversion.
