Adam Thompson preferisce allontanarsi dalla creazione vera e propria, utilizzando oggetti ritrovati che provengono da una grande varietà di fonti e luoghi. Senza una logica predeterminata o un preciso codice concettuale che ne determinino l’inclusione o l’esclusione, questi oggetti vengono collocati nello spazio in gran parte inalterati, con una economia di strumenti che non aggiunge nulla ad un preesistente stato di industriale sovrabbondanza e nel più ampio rispetto della loro integrità. Le tensioni insite in ciascun lavoro vengono amplificate attraverso il dialogo con tutti gli altri e dal valore loro attribuito in quanto parte di una esposizione artistica.
Portando con sè evidenti tracce di decadenza, collasso e fallimento, gli oggetti che Thompson utilizza rimandano al momento in cui il logorio ambientale prende il sopravvento e ciò che rimane è il detrito, mostrando la regressione alla loro natura originaria. In questo modo i temi dell’obsolescenza, della regressione e dell’esaurimento attivano quel potenziale che risiede nell’effimera comprensione della materia. Rianimando questi materiali e detriti culturali, Thompson propone un esame sul concetto stesso di creatività e sulla relazione dell’umanità con la natura attraverso una esperienza materica piuttosto che linguistica.
‘In un certo senso, non c’è niente di nuovo qui. È un umile processo in cui si raccolgono e si compongono oggetti trovati, come farebbe un archeologo, un metodo che potrebbe essere descritto semplicemente come composizione di ciò che già esiste. Niente è trasformato da un intervento diretto. Questo comporta una conversazione più ampia sulla creatività, in cui il consumatore/soggetto affronta ingiunzioni constanti e ostinate sull’essere creativo. Io voglio che questa riduzione stimoli la discussione sull’importanza dell’invenzione come requisito dell’opera d’arte’ (Adam Thompson).

Adam Thompson prefers to distance himself from hands on making, utilizing found objects from a variety of locations and sources. Without a predetermined logic or conceptual code for their inclusion or exclusion, these objects are redistributed in the space largely unaltered, with an economy of means that adds nothing to an existing state of industrial overabundance and with large respect for their integrity. The tensions within the individual pieces are enhanced by the relationship between the works collectively and their questionable value as an exhibition.
Exhibiting decay, collapse and failure, the objects emerge from the moment environmental attrition takes hold and regress to their orignal nature. Yet themes of obsolescence, regression and exhaustion give way to the potential residing within the ephemeral understanding of matter. By re-instituting this material and cultural detritus, Thompson enacts an examination of creativity itself and of humankind’s relationship to nature through a physical experience which has been prioritized over language.
‘In a sense, there is not anything new here. It’s an unassuming process of collecting and composing found objects like an Archaeologist, not taking ownership but simply making visible, a method that could be described simply as composition. Nothing is transformed by direct intervention. This points to a broader conversation about value, authorship and creativity, when the consumer/subject faces constant and unrelenting injunctions to be creative. This pushes the question of the importance of invention as a requirement of the artwork's agency’.
